How To Feel Energized From The Inside Out

Have you ever woken up still feeling tired? As though sleep was just a waste of time because it didn’t do anything for you? Or maybe you felt okay in the morning, but then hit a slump in the afternoon, well before you’ll have any chance of going to bed or even taking a nap. If so, you’re not alone. Busyness is seen as a badge of honour these days, and it’s so easy to assume you can just run on empty until you can finally take a break. But that’s not actually going to help you be all that productive, and even trying to find some energy from caffeine, energy drinks, or sugar isn’t going to do much either – the fact is that your energy all comes from within (at least the energy that lasts and won’t cause you any damage). So with that in mind, keep reading to learn how to feel energized from the inside out.

Sleep Enough And Well

The fact is you can eat all the superfoods and do all the workouts, but if you’re not getting enough sleep (and, hugely importantly, enough quality sleep because that makes all the difference) your energy levels are just never going to be where they need to be. That’s why you’ve got to aim for seven to nine hours of sleep a night (everyone’s different and will need different amounts of sleep, so you may need to experiment a bit to work out what’s best for you) and make that non-negotiable. If it means going to bed earlier to ensure you wake up at the right time, so be it. 

On top of that, sticking to a schedule in general makes a lot of sense because your body (and brain) absolutely loves consistency, so try to wake up and go to bed at the same time every day – that even includes weekends. Plus, ditch the screens before bed because the blue light they emit messes with your melatonin, and that makes it harder to fall asleep. That’s all screens, so you should even stop watching TV at least an hour before you intend to get to sleep. 

Hydrate Properly

If you’re feeling really sluggish you might not actually be tired in the traditional sense, but instead it could be that you’re dehydrated because that leads to fatigue and a lack of energy. Why? Well, your body needs water to be able to function properly & feel energized, but most people don’t drink nearly enough, and that could include you. Are you feeling tired with a foggy mind and digestion issues? Then more water could be the solution. 

Start your day with a big glass of water – and do that before you do anything else, including drinking your coffee (why not have some water on your bedside table so you can drink it as soon as you wake up? That’ll stop you hitting the snooze button as well, so there’s a double win). And whenever you leave the house, take a bottle of water with you (ideally a refillable one as that’s better for the environment and cheaper over time than disposable ones). If you’re still worried you’re not hydrated enough or you’re not feeling the effects as you’d want to, try adding more water-rich foods to your diet like cucumber, oranges, watermelon, and leafy greens as they can certainly help. 

Eat The Right Foods

They say you are what you eat, and if you eat foods that are full of junk and sugar, then you’re really not going to be feeling your best – yes, you might get a jolt of energy or your hunger might disappear for a short while, but it’s not going to last. In fact, all that’s going to do is ensure your energy levels are all over the place, and that’s potentially going to make you more tired than ever. 

The best thing to do is make sure you get whole, unprocessed foods whenever you can – that means things like lean proteins, healthy fats, and carbs full of fiber. All these things will help to keep your blood sugar steady, and that’s going to make you feel energized and keep your levels up without any sudden crashes. And never, ever skip meals – low energy often comes from not eating enough or skipping key nutrients, so it’s not a good idea (plus you’ll be so hungry you might binge a load of bad food to make up for it). Plus, eat when you’re hungry, rather than waiting for specific meal times – mealtimes are just made up for convenience, and it’s far better to eat at ‘weird’ times than starve yourself or eat when you’re not hungry just because the clock tells you to.

Deal With Stress

One thing that’s sure to drain your energy a lot faster than almost anything else is stress. When you’re stressed, your body will be in constant fight or flight mode, and you’ll be burning through your resources far too quickly, leaving you feeling worn out and depleted. 

Although stress can be hard to deal with, and you might need to see a professional to help you if this is a chronic problem you’re having a hard time with, there are some things you can do that should reduce your stress levels. One thing to do is make sure you take breaks – even five minutes of fresh air can reset your brain and make you feel better, for example. You could also start practicing mindfulness and deep breathing, which might sound a bit cliche, but does actually work. And of course, you need to protect your boundaries and say no sometimes – it’ll be uncomfortable at first, but you’ll feel so much better when you do it. In the end, lower stress means you’ll feel energized and a better mood, so it’s got to be something you work at.
